Nelson Rocha was born and raised in the Bradford Community. He was an avid soccer player who grew up playing for many clubs, including Bradford, Newmarket and Richmond Hill. As a player Nelson always brought a leadership quality to his teams. In 1995 he lead his team, Holy Trinity, to finish within the top 6 in the province. Holy Trinity was a single A team that competed at the AAA level of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) . Later in his soccer career, Nelson went on to play for Algonquin College in Ottawa, where he was able to make nationals two years consecutively.

Nelson has always had an eye for coaching and developing young talent in the GTA region. He continued his life in soccer by coaching various teams within DFC, and in the process developing many players who have gone on to play at major Canadian and American universities. Nelson's playing and coaching experience has lead to the creation of the DFC Academy, with the intention of benefiting many more Canadian soccer players for years to come.
